Album Info:Most, if not all, of the photographs in this album were captured in Northeast Wisconsin in the fall of 2020, so they are mostly CN operating on former C&NW, GB&W, MILW, and SOO rails. Once in a while I try to catch ELS and WSOR on former MILW rails too.

WC 15, ex-AC 9606 or AC 9602
Title:  WC 15, ex-AC 9606 or AC 9602
Description:  An interesting new visitor rests in the CN, former SOO yard, at Neenah, WI, on 13 Nov. '20. Some references avow that WC 15 was built in 1976 as AC 9606. However, the last number partially visible under the WC logo looks more like a 2 than a 6. AC 9602 was renumber WC 12 according to some references. The CN depot/yard office is the gray building beyond the caboose. The tan 4- or 5-story facility behind and to the right of that is 5K Fibres, 1111 Henry St., based in Greenville, WI. They purchased the former Kimberly-Clark Corp. (K-C) Neenah Nonwovens Facility ca. Apr. '20.

CN 3268, CN 2831, GTW 6228, CN 9567
Title:  CN 3268, CN 2831, GTW 6228, CN 9567
Description:  A CN through freight traverses the west leg of the wye at the north end of the former SOO yard at Neenah, WI, on 21 Nov. '20. The train is passing the remnants of the foundation from the ca. 1955 masonry SOO depot. There are rail sections supported by concrete blocks and railroad ties stacked upon it. It was built to replace the wooden depot built in 1891 on Sherry St., about 850 ft. to the southeast, which was torn down soon after the new one opened. The Holiday gas station stood in this grassy area before the Main St. overpass (just out-of-frame to the right) was built. On the far side of the train lies Arrowhead Park, a closed paper sludge landfill. Before the landfill was opened in the '50s, the south shore of Little Lake Butte des Morts came right up to the north leg of the wye. In the background, a large quantity of fill is being added to the eastern half of the park, in preparation of future improvements. The Fox Valley Energy Center (formerly Minergy Fox Valley Glass Aggregate Plant) dominated the eastern half of the landfill/park from its opening in Jan. '98 until demolition was completed in the spring of '16. Several of Neenah's repugnant, contemporary edifices taint the skyline in the background at right. I am not a fan of modern architecture, obviously.

Description:  A CN through freight crosses N. Lake St. as it heads northwest via former SOO, rails at Neenah, WI, on 21 Nov. '20. Herb & Dolly Smith Park lies beyond the train to the right. Clearwater Paper Corp., historically Kimberly-Clark’s Lakeview mill, 249 N. Lake St., Neenah, WI (physically located in Fox Crossing, WI (formerly Town of Menasha, WI, from 1855 until 14 Apr. 2016)), an active rail customer, looms in the background. Eggers Div. of VT Industries, previously Eggers Industries, founded as Hardwood Products Co. in 1910, 164 N. Lake St., an active rail customer, is partially visible to the left.

IC 3101
Title:  IC 3101
Description:  A CN local crosses S. Mason St. while headed northeast via former C&NW rails at Appleton, WI, on 21 Nov. '20. Train has just departed the yard at Appleton Junction and is now bound for Little Chute and Kaukauna. I haven't learned why one side of the bridge is lower than the other, but I have discovered why one side is wider than the other. An old photograph reveals that the right (northbound) lane of S. Mason St. once accommodated a streetcar track and a lane for motor vehicle traffic simultaneously. You can also see that the bridge abutments and piers were designed to support two tracks, but I don't believe this area was ever double-tracked.

Description:  A CN local crosses High St. as it heads south via former C&NW rails at New London, WI, on 22 Nov. '20. This portion of the community lies within Outagamie Co., most of it is in Waupaca Co. (where rrpicturearchives.com lists it). Local was preparing to service Amcor Flexibles New London (formerly Bemis North America, Inc.), 718 High St. (partially visible to the right). This grade crossing and the one at Industrial Loop Rd. were recently repaired.

Description:  A CN local passes United Cooperative (formerly Greenville Co-op/Land O'Lakes Feed) and crosses Municipal Dr./Hwy. 76 as it heads southeast via former C&NW rails at Greenville, WI, on 22 Nov. '20. Founded as Greenville Cooperative in 1931, it merged with United Cooperative in 2017. The historic Greenville House, a.k.a. Kronser Hotel & Saloon, is partially visible at the right. Built by Joseph A. Kronser in 1897, it is currently home to Greenville Station (formerly Bootleggers). The depot, built in 1915 to replace the original (ca. 1876) depot, stood right about where that silver car and blue SUV are parked. Two fellow rail fans can be seen in the parking lot across the road to the left (those are their vehicles parked where the depot stood). Train was heading back to Appleton from New London.

Description:  A CN local crosses S. Whitman Ave. and takes the west leg of the wye as it returns to the former C&NW yard at Appleton Junction, WI, after its jaunt to New London on 22 Nov. '20. The W. College Ave. overpass is partially visible in the background. The facility partially visible to the right was occupied by WOW Logistics and PODS Self-Storage, 1840 W. Spencer St., Appleton, WI. The WOW Logistics sign notes that the facility is for lease, I haven't noticed any PODS activity lately either. The facility has a spur which has not been used for quite a while. Local was returning from New London.

The corporate headquarters of Plexus, 1 Plexus Way, can be seen in the background to the right. The P. H. Glatfelter Co. paper mill occupied that site for 135 years, the oldest part of the original mill was constructed in 1874. Glatfelter purchased the mill from Bergstrom Paper Co. in 1979. Bergstrom had purchased the mill, originally Winnebago Paper, in 1904. Glatfelter moved the jobs to Ohio in June 2006, the mill stood idle for about two years until it was torn down, demolition was completed in May 2009.

CN 2274, CN 2543, BCOL 4602
Title:  CN 2274, CN 2543, BCOL 4602
Description:  A CN through freight traverses the west leg of the wye at the north end of the former SOO yard and approaches the Main St. overpass at Neenah, WI, on 26 Nov. '20. Train had three locomotives, CN 2274, CN 2543, BCOL 4602. First Presbyterian Church, 200 S. Church St., is partially visible above the second locomotive. The clock tower of the once impressive 1888 city hall building, intersection of S. Commercial St. and W. Doty St., looks like a church steeple from this perspective, but it is a block east of the church. Some of Neenah's bland, unimaginative, modern buildings, posing as architecture, stand in the background to the left. I am not a fan of modern architecture, obviously. The Holiday gas station stood somewhere in the foreground before the Main St. overpass was built.

ELS 501

Description:  An E&LS train crosses Amberg Rd. as it pulls 32 cars southeast via former MILW rails at Amberg (originally Pike), WI, on 27 Nov. '20. The train is passing Mathis Hardware & Lumber, Inc., W7960 Amberg St. The business dates to Dec. of 1946, when James D. Mathis established a hardware and feed store here. The company is currently owned and managed by his son and grandson. The facility used to receive rail service, but it doesn't look like it has for quite a while. When I was here in '14, there was still a spur hidden in the grass next to the facility. I forgot to look to see if it was still there today. The depot stood east (right) of the tracks, between Coleman Ave. and Amberg Rd., closer to the former. It has been moved to Amberg Museum Complex about 2 1/2 blocks southwest of its original location and 180 degrees to its original orientation. I was thrilled to encounter a former MILW locomotive plying former MILW rails.

Description:  An E&LS train parallels Main St. (originally E. Railroad St.)/Hwy. 141 and approaches Monroe St. as it pulls 32 cars south via former MILW rails at Wausaukee, WI, on 27 Nov. '20. The interesting, old, white building partially visible beyond the first bulkhead flatcar is the historic Hotel Wausaukee, 502 Main St. Erected in 1889, many Milwaukee & Northern (M&N), later MILW, passengers undoubtedly stayed there. Extensively altered over the years, it is currently home to Graphic Impressions Photography. Some interesting information regarding the structure's history can be found at: http://www.hotelwausaukee.com/. An ice house once stood between the locomotive and Main St./Hwy. 141. There used to be a conjoined depot and freight house here, west of the rails south of Monroe St., out-of-frame to the right. I was thrilled to encounter a former MILW locomotive plying former MILW rails. A much better view of this scene can be found at: http://rrpicturearchives.net/showPicture.aspx?id=5431528.

GTW 4907
Title:  GTW 4907
Description:  A CN local, with 7 cars, crosses the Fox River Navigation Canal via the former C&NW swing bridge in 'The Flats' at Appleton, WI, on 28 Nov. '20. Train was returning from Kimberly and Combined Locks. I haven't noticed a builder's plate, but according to bridgehunter.com, the Warren through truss swing bridge was built in 1908. However, a recent contributor to that site believes it was built after 1919. A photograph caption in the Post-Crescent on 29 May 1974 states that the bridge was "nearly 50 years old." The canal is in the foreground, but the body of water beyond the spit of land to the left is the last remaining scrap of what was once the South Channel of the Fox River through 'The Flats.' Old maps reveal that the west end of the South Channel was filled in at some point between 1916 and 1957. Most of the remainder of the South Channel was filled in the following years. Over the past several years, I have noticed that some misinformed individuals erroneously refer to ‘The Flats’ as ‘Oneida Flats,’ or some other variation. For all of my life, the historic, industrial heart of Appleton has been simply ‘The Flats.’ However, in the late 19th and early 20th centuries it was referred to as 'The Water Power.'

CN 2999 and CN 5627
Title:  CN 2999 and CN 5627
Description:  A CN through freight approaches Harrison St. as it heads south via former SOO rails at Town of Oshkosh, Winnebago Co., WI, on 1 Dec. '20. Train had four locomotives, CN 2999 and CN 5627 pulling as well as CN 2984 and CN 2308 or 2808 mid-train. The former C&NW right-of-way runs parallel to these tracks just out-of-frame to the right. The CN main line transitions from the former SOO to the former C&NW right-of-way at Harrison St. I was standing on Harrison St., in the City of Oshkosh, but the train is traversing an isolated, pitiful scrap of the Town of Oshkosh.

CN 2325 and CN 2522
Title:  CN 2325 and CN 2522
Description:  A CN container train crosses the mouth of the Fox River via the 2013 CN bascule bridge at Oshkosh, WI, on 1 Dec. '20. This bridge was completed in Aug. '13 to replace the former C&NW 1899 swing bridge. The interesting and historic brick industrial facility at 32-36 Broad St., was erected by Oshkosh’s J. A. Day & Co. in 1870. The flour mill was built for George M. Wakefield, et al., to replace the earlier Oshkosh City Flouring Mills, which stood here until destroyed by fire on 17 May ‘70. That large, old, wooden flour mill (built in ‘56) had been purchased by A. S. Trow & Co. in ‘69 (Wakefield was a partner in that company). When the current facility was completed in ‘70, it became known as the Wakefield Mill, or Wakefield’s Mill, operated by the Wakefield Bros. It continued to be referred to as the Wakefield Mill until at least ‘95, operated by Woodford, Foote & Co. in ‘76, and then Foote Bros. & Co. from about ‘77 until ‘90. It operated as the Foote-Cornish Milling Co. from ‘91 until about the end of 1900. It was home to the Wisconsin Pulp Plaster Co. circa ‘04-‘07. The Baker Paper Co., founded in ‘99, moved into the facility in Aug. ‘14 and owned it until ca. 1993. It is currently home to the Oshkosh-area United Way, et al.
