Bleeding UP B23-7 160
Title:  Bleeding UP B23-7 160
Description:  UP B23-7 160 at Cotter, Arkansas on December 5, 1989, Kodachrome by Chuck Zeiler. This train is shoving the freight cars into the yard. Of concern to me at least was the brown liquid leaking out just above the fuel tank (note the wet ballast), because I got sprayed as it passed by. Fortunately it did not smell like fuel, so I would suppose it was a coolant leak.

UP B30-7A 246
Title:  UP B30-7A 246
Description:  Union Pacific Railroad B30-7A 246 and GP39-2 2362 crossing the White River at Cotter, Arkansas on January 24, 1989, Kodachrome by Chuck Zeiler. Although the river appears placid, it was not always so. I've seen one photograph of the water flooding to within a few feet of the bottom of the bridge spans. In the 1940's a dam was constructed about ten miles upsteam and the danger of flooding all but disappeared. About the bridge; The following is from the book, The White River Railway, by Walter M. Adams:

The plan for the bridge was approved May 25, 1903. A contract was let to the Phoenix Bridge Company and work got under way. Since the U. S. Corps of Engineers determined that the White River was a navigable waterway, a turn span had to be introduced to permit steamboats free progress up the river. The turn span was 285 feet long and the elevation from the top of the rail on the span to low water level was 59 feet (which was 410 feet above sea level). The bridge was designed to handle a 35 foot rise which would give a plus or minus 15 foot clearance from high water. The total length of the bridge, not including the short five panel timber trestle approaches at each end, was 1091 feet, 7½ inches. The grade from milepost 381.8, just north of the final location of the Cotter depot, to the first masonry pier was ascending at 1%. The first three steel deck girder spans were level, the turn span and next girder span were level, while the last six deck girder spans started climbing and elevated the grade two plus feet in 320 feet. The total length of each deck girder spans was 80 feet 3½ inches. The grade then returned to a steady 1% up through the tunnel (roughly 1000 feet past the bridge) and continued to milepost 391.6. Since the bulk of the bridge was brought in by steamboat and barge, there was no need to wait for the completion of the railroad to Cotter to commence construction. By June 1904, trains began operating over the bridge, but the turn span was not completed until June 20. The turn span was operated just once, for testing and acceptance by the railroad, and never turned again. The arrival of the railroad in Cotter killed off the steamboat business.

UP B30-7A 247
Title:  UP B30-7A 247
Description:  Union Pacific Railroad B30-7A 247 at Cotter, Arkansas on October 8, 1989, Kodachrome by Chuck Zeiler. This bridge was built in 1904, featured a swing section to allow river navigation, never used. This train is climbing out of Cotter on an upward sloping 1% grade, and in a moment will enter the Cotter Tunnel, 1034 feet in length.

This bridge was built by the White River Railway (the construction company) for the Saint Louis Iron Mountain & Southern Railway, later owned by the MP, then conveyed to the UP in the 1984 merger, and became the property of the newly formed Missouri and North Arkansas Railroad (MNA) in 1992.

Title:  UP B30-7A 253
Description:  A time exposure of UP B30-7A 253 at Cotter, Arkansas on the evening of April 5, 1989, Kodachrome by Chuck Zeiler. This locoomotive was built as MP B307A 4853. The "A" in the model designation indicates that the unit produced 3000 horsepower from a 12-cylinder prime mover. This is a time exposure, the streaks in the sky are stars that left a trail as the Earth revolved during exposure, about 20 minutes.

UP B23-7A 257
Title:  UP B23-7A 257
Description:  Union Pacific Railroad B23-7A 257 drilling the yard at Cotter, Arkansas on February 25, 1989, Kodachrome by Chuck Zeiler. A B23-7A is a 12 cylinder B23-7 with horsepower boosted to 250 per cylinder or 3,000 horsepower. In 1980 the MP ordered three B23-7A's (#'s 4667-4669 , later UP #'s 257-259) and tested them systemwide. The result was the GE model B30-7A, a B30-7 with a 12 cylinder FDL prime mover. They were not renumbered into the B30-7A series on the MP because they lacked Sentry Wheel Slip and had different engine governors.

UP Omaha GP20 335
Title:  UP Omaha GP20 335
Description:  UP Omaha GP20 335 at Council Bluffs, Iowa on an unknown day in October 1963, Kodachrome by Dick Rumbolz, Chuck Zeiler collection. Number 335 was built as UP GP9 335 in September 1957 (c/n 23691), retired June 15, 1981 and sold to Precision National Corporation. In October 1965 it was sent to EMD for application of EMD's own turbocharger, becoming one of 27 UP cab GP9's so upgraded to 2000 horsepower by EMD. Please see: http://utahrails.net/articles/up-gp9-turbo.php

Threre appears to be a conflict between the photo date and the upgrade date, and I will research that, but I stand by the photo date based on the Kodak date stamp and the pencil notations on the slide frame.

UP GP9m 340
Title:  UP GP9m 340
Description:  Union Pacific Railroad GP30 724 and GP9m 340 at Kansas City, Missouri on an unknown day in April 1980, Kodachrome by Chuck Zeiler. Number 724 was built in March 1963 (c/n 28204), retired in April 1982 and sold for scrap. Number 340 was built in September 1957 (c/n 23696) and was retired April 2, 1981. It began as a normal 1750 hp GP9, but between 1962-65 the UP installed EMD turbochargers on 55 of its 300-series GP9's, creating 2000 hp GP9's, or, as they became known, Omaha GP20's. The Omaha GP20's also received large 2400 gallon fuel tanks and some were further modified with heaters in the tanks to allow them to use Bunker C fuel oil. Those locomotives were converted back to diesel fuel in the 1970's. However, as the conversion back to diesel was taking place, the UP was adding 2400 gallon tanks to some of the un-converted Omaha GP20's as well as to some of the un-turbocharged GP9's. So, while number 340 shows a larger fuel tank, it is unknown if it was ever converted to burn Bunker C fuel.

UP GP9m 340
Title:  UP GP9m 340
Description:  Union Pacific Railroad GP9m 340 at Kansas City, Missouri on an unknown day in April 1980, Kodachrome by Chuck Zeiler. Number 340 was built in September 1957 (c/n 23696) on EMD Order 5552 and was retired April 2, 1981. During June 1964 this locomotive was equipped with an EMD turbocharger at UP's Omaha Shops, giving this unit and at least 54 other GP9's the moniker "Omaha GP20", and creating a 2000 hp GP9. The program began in early 1955 with the application of AiResearch Model T-30 turbochargers to four GP9's at UP's East Los Angeles Shops (four turbochargers per unit). The four units were sent out for road testing, and after modifications, the program was moved to Salt Lake City in September 1956. By 1959 the program was moved again to Omaha, and nine more GP9's were turbocharged (bring the total to 13). At the same time, ten nearly new GP9's of the 300-series were turbocharged using Elliott Company products, and three GP9's were sent to La Grange for application of EMD's new turbocharger. Later, the UP sent six more GP9's to EMD for the same modification. Between 1962 and 1965, 55 more GP9's in the 300-series were turbocharged with the EMD product by the UP at Omaha, and the AiResearch and Elliott modified units were de-turbocharged and converted back to normally-aspired GP9's. Number 340 was modified in June 1964, and at the same time a 2400 gallon fuel tank was installed, forcing one of the twin air reservoirs to be re-located to the front of the locomotive. Some of the turbocharged GP9's were also modified to burn low grade Bunker C fuel oil, and heaters were installed in the fuel tanks to permit efficient fuel flow. It is unknown exactly which Omaha GP20's were modified to burn Bunker C fuel, but the telltale sign is open metal grating on the walkways along the long hood to dissapate heat, and 340 shows signs of that. During the 1970's, Bunker C fueled locomotives were converted back to diesel due to rising costs of that fuel. The full turbo story is at this link: http://www.utahrails.net/articles/up-gp9-turbo.php

UP C-57 430
Title:  UP C-57 430
Description:  Union Pacific Railroad C-57 2-8-0 430 at an unknown location, on an unknown date, photo by Dick Rumbolz, Chuck Zeiler collection. Unfortunately, I have no information about this photo. This was a negative I purchased from Dick Rumbolz in 1965. He sent a batch of negatives, I selected which ones I wanted, mailed the rejects back to him with a check for what I kept. This particular negative cost me 45 cents. From utahrails.net I determined that this locomotive was built in October 1900 by Baldwin (c/n 18324) as a Vauclain compound and assigned road number 1650, classed C-57. It was later simplified and retired in June 1958.

UP SD24 446
Title:  UP SD24 446
Description:  Union Pacific Railroad SD24 446 and Slug S4 at Pine Bluffs, Wyoming on an unknown day in August 1984, Kodachrome by Edward M. DeRouin, Chuck Zeiler collection. Number 446 was built in August 1960 (c/n 26035) as EMD SD24 demonstrator 7201, intended for the SP and painted in SP's gray and red nose paint scheme. It was sold to the UP in August 1961, eventually paired (around 1980) with Slug S4 and used in track sled maintenance service until retired in May 1985 (the last operating SD24 on the UP), when it was traded to EMD and scrapped by Pielet Brothers. Number S4 was built in September 1957 (c/n 23722) as GP9B 316B, rebuilt at Omaha in August 1975 as Slug S4, additional sand boxes (DD35 design) were added in October 1980. Slug S4 was retired in January 1990 and scrapped.
