Two Hump Units Humping
Title:  Two Hump Units Humping
Description:  Humping a train out of Proviso Yard 9 and over the hump, which is still many car lengths to the right, where they are uncoupled and roll through the retarders into the classification yard. The tall signals in the picture tell the engineers what to do, e.g., proceed at hump speed, back up, and stop. The caboose was probably part of the inbound train, which must have been very heavy to require that much hump power.

Description:  I took no notes on this trip so here is my educated guess for the data on this picture. It was taken about at Rochelle. The eastbound freight coming at us was a local (one Geep) must have had work on the normally westbound track because as you can see we were running right-handed. This was CTC territory signaled both directions on both tracks, if I remember correctly.

Description:  The Chicago and Western Indiana Railroad was the owner of Dearborn Station in Chicago and the trackage leading to it. It was owned equally by five of the railroads using it to reach the terminal, and kept those companies from needing their own lines into the city.
