Coal on the ex MKT

Whos first
Title:  Whos first
Description:  I was in McAlester one day in late 2008 to find the UP was fleeting northbounds on the old MKT. Two of them stand ready to roll at the north end of town. They'll take to the old Missouri Pacific at Wagoner to reach Kansas City, as UP runs directionally north of there, southbounds using the MKT, northbounds the MP.

Crossing the Rock
Title:  Crossing the Rock
Description:  A northbound UP train on the ex MKT approaches the diamond for the one time Rock Island Choctaw Route, now the Arkansas & Oklahoma, seen in the foreground. AOK runs the line from here to a connection with the KCS at Howe. They subsequently acquired most of the right of way from here to Seminole and OKC. I'd love to see an MKT switcher squealing around that connecting track with a cut for the Rock, or a Rock GP 7 doing the same for the Katy.

Description:  A 145 car UP train comes off the viaduct and onto the BNSF Ft Scott Sub via the connection at BN Crossing. UP is on trackage rights here, having assumed MKT's rights over the BNSF to Paola, where it will gain its own line to reach Oklasoma and Texas.

Not quite what I was after
Title:  Not quite what I was after
Description:  This southbound UP train has a single unit leading as it passes the Choteau elevator. I like lineside structures, and was trying to work a shot with the elevator in it, but didnt have time to change lenses after outrunning the train from Adair. It turned out the elevator was partly blocked by some trees, and I didnt quite pick the right spot either, through this shot is acceptable. Better luck next time. I'll drag my butt out of bed early some morning and go over here to sit til something shows, which usually doesn't take too long.

DPU though the connection
Title:  DPU though the connection
Description:  The DPU on this southbound coal train is on the connection from the ex MKT to the ex MP. The combination of the two routes under UPs banner has allowed for some interesting, and useful traffic pattern changes, though I really miss the old roads.

Catching the light
Title:  Catching the light
Description:  I first saw this vantage point about 20 years ago when I was a driver for JB Hunt. Parking a 53 foot trailer on an overpass to shoot a train photo is not really a good idea, and I lived in NY at the time, so never was able to get back there to shoot trains. Now that I live within 90 minutes of this location, I can get there, but I find the trees have grown up, making what was an open shot pretty limited. I came across this southbound on the ex MKT and decided Id go for it anyway, trees or not. I was able to catch the train with some nose lighting, so not a total waste of time. Ill have to get here earlier in the day and see how it looks with the sun high enough to get over the trees.

Ex SP unit
Title:  Ex SP unit
Description:  And its clean!! UP has finally finished painting all its power in Armour Yellow, now that the last two CNW units have gone to the paint shop for the UP treatment. The ex SP GEs had been running around in patched UP reporting marks for years, and now all are repainted. There are two on this 123 car southbound on the ex MKT, hitting the diamond for the ex MP here at Wagoner. UPDATE: See Robert Jackson's comment below. I had read somewhere that UP had finally repainted all of its pre merger units in Armour Yellow. Apparently as of late March 2019, that is not the case. In any event, this one looks good in new paint.

Taking the connection
Title:  Taking the connection
Description:  Wed gone over to Fort Gibson Dam on Sunday Apr 11, since it was such a nice day, temps in low 80s and sun. On the way back, we went over through Okay, and followed SR 16 into Wagoner. Along the way, we caught this northbound empty San Antonio coal train headed north on the ex MKT. We were able to get ahead of him and set up for this shot of the train taking the connection onto the ex MP here at Wagoner, as almost all northbounds do.

Surprise from not so far off
Title:  Surprise from not so far off
Description:  The KCS is only about an hour away, over near Stilwell, and they connect with the UPs ex MP Van Buren sub in that town in Arkansas. But you dont see a lot of their power here. For the second week in a row, I found KCS power on the UP. Those coal train must have racked up a lot of horsepower hours. A KCSM unit brings up the rear of this 110 car train as it crosses SR 51 and heads for KC.

Lucky catch
Title:  Lucky catch
Description:  I was following UP 4014, which was running the ex MKT from Parsons Kan to Mc Alester, and had just pulled up to the crossing at the end of the day. This 117 car northbound was just getting underway, tiptoeing through the daisy pickers as it passed through the station area where the steam engine was on display. The meet shot is in the UP Steam album.

Rare sight
Title:  Rare sight
Description:  Not the power, there are still tons of EMD 40s on the UP, and the paint scheme is the same as its been since the 1930s. The unusual thing about this train is its a northbound on the ex MKT. North of Wagoner, he UP uses directional running, since from there to KC, it has both the ex MP via Coffeyville Kan, and the ex MKT via Parsons Kan. It uses the MKT from KC almost exclusively for southbounds, except for this local based in Pryor, OK, 25 miles to the north. I caught it en route to my grandsons football game in nearby Coweta. Football and trains, cant go wrong-and they won!!
