Description:  AW. Here is an image of a photo by Arlington J. Wolfe that was taken from the 24th Street Bridge in Altoona, Pennsylvania, on 19 August 1933. Shown here (L to R) are Pennsylvania Railroad engines #6956 and #5418. Both were built by the Baldwin Locomotive Works. #6956 is an M-1 (4-8-2) "Mountain" constructed during December of 1926 and retired in November of 1949, while #5418 was built in February of 1927 and retired in February of 1956. In this context, they're passing SLOPE Tower with a passenger train that's on its way up the Allegheny Mountains via the Horseshoe Curve to Johnstown and points West. Note the semaphore signals and the other steam locomotives waiting for their own helper runs at the far right. William E. Burket Collection.

It was used to turn locomotives returning to Altoona after making helper/pusher runs up the Allegheny Mountains to Gallitzin and back. Visible in the middle distance are several engines awaiting their next assignments. In the far distance are two structures and twin smokestacks belonging to the PRR's 12th Street Car Shops. It's just returned from a helper/pusher run up the Allegheny Mountains to Gallitzin where it uncoupled and returned here, to be turned around, for yet another run up "The Mountain." It's just returned from a passenger helper run up the Allegheny Mountains to Gallitzin where it uncoupled and returned here, to be turned around, for yet another run up "The Mountain." Visible beyond it are several other locomotives that are also poised for helper/pusher runs. Beyond them are the 17th Street Bridge and several of the PRR's 12th Street Car Shops.
