St Louis Union Station Rolling Stock Collection |
Description: |
Filling up several of the 32 tracks leading into the St Louis Union Station is a nice collection of passenger, freight and a lone locomotive. The collection is just outside the former covered train shed which has been transformed with a new hotel, amuseument park, reflecting pool and even an aquarium. |

WP Dome/buffet/dorm #831, Silver Chalet |
Description: |
This car, built by Budd Company in November of 1948, has led an interesting life. Originally WP #831, it was used in payment to CBQ when one of their cars was destroyed while in WP storage. Upon the BN/CBQ merger, it was renumbered BN #804 (not applied) and then BN 252. It slid onto the Amtrak roster as #9812 and later through several private owners. Quad Graphics bought it and heavily modified it, especially adding the massive open vestibule (nicknamed "The Alligator" by some.) It is now stored at the St Louis Union Station. Unfortunately it was closed while we were there. |

SAL Sleeper/lounge #20, Hollywood Beach |
Description: |
Side view of the former Seaboard Air Line sleeper/lounge car, Hollywood Beach, with its massive solarium windows at one end. The car was built by Pullman-Standard in 1956 with 5 bedrooms and a sun room and numbered 20. It features oversized windows that extend to the ceiling giving a feeling like you're riding in a Dome Car. This car ran on the original "Silver Meteor" from New York to Miami and was one of only three cars of its type to be built. The car was renumbered 6501 in 1967 and renamed "Sun Ray" by the Seaboard Coast Line Railroad. Conveyed to Amtrak in 1971, the car was renumbered 3231 and was retired by Amtrak in October 1981. During the trip, announcement was made that the late actor Jackie Gleason from television's "The Honeymooners" used to ride in this car as he didn't like to fly. |

PPCX Buffet/observation #800726, L&N Royal Street |
Description: |
This car was originally built by Pullman-Standard as Louisville & Nashville buffet/observation car #3301, Royal Street. From an online source "In 1954 the two L&N cars, 3300 ROYAL CANAL and this one, were reassigned from the Crescent to the Gulf Wind and remained on that train until 1966. Both were withdrawn from lease to Pullman on 23 October 1968, retired in 1970 and sold to equipment dealer Preston Duffy. Royal Canal was scrapped after a fire, but Royal Street went into private ownership" |

AMTK MHC #1466 |
Description: |
Somehow, this Amtrak MHC ("materials handling car") ended up in the St Louis Union Station collection. This car was one of the first MHC cars (material handling car) purchased from Thrall in 1986 to handle express packages on passenger trains and were built for high speed service (max of 110 mph). The cars were taken out of service in 2003 and sold off. |
