The B&A used this style for several years, changing the color of the card stock each year. For those who may be wondering, the SPLA&SL is the San Pedro, Los Angeles & Salt Lake, which, today is the UP's line between Salt Lake City and Daggett, CA., where it joins the Santa Fe. |

The "horseshoe", "new and old locations" |
Description: |
Since many of the photos contained in this and subsequent albums were taken in this area, this map can provide some idea of the locality. Milepost 128 is indicated at the right side of the map and the "famous" MP 129 is at center. The double stone arch is the first river crossing west of MP 128. At the top of the horseshoe, at Bench Mark 233.3 (elev in meters) is the location known as "the art colony". The origional R.O.W., known as the "old location", is traced by the dotted red line. Origional construction stone arch bridges still stand where it crosses the river. The heavy, black dotted lines show the boundaries between Chester in Hampden county (right side of map), Middlefield in Hampshire county occupying the upper left, and Becket in Berkshire county ocuppying the lower left. The Westfield River is the boundary between Becket and Middlefield from the point in the upper right to a spot between Milepost 133 and 134. |

Summit and Muddy Pond |
Description: |
Another area heavily represented photographically in this and other CR Boston line albums is the summit of Washington hill, marked by the red "X" just below Bullards Crossing. Above Bullards is MP 139 and the mile and a half long tangent across the Hinsdale flats. Cutting diagonally across the map and Muddy Pond is the boundary between Washington (lower half) and Hinsdale (upper half). About halfway between MP 138, at the lower end of Muddy Pond, and the bottom edge of the map is the former location of Washington depot, the west end of Washington cut, and the top of the grade, all marked by a red "D". Summit Hill Rd. runs across the mid-point of the cut. For you younger "B&A freaks", (and you know who you are), the house atop Earnes Hill to the east of Muddy Pond is rumored to be Arlo Guthrie's. The structure across the road from the red "D" is the "Cat Lady's" house, which no longer exists. |

Look at all those friction bearing trucks!.....and you wonder why there's "Brake shoe smoke". The friction bearing trucks leaked journal oil onto the wheels, which heated up and smoked during prolonged brake applications, NOT the brakes themselves. |
