GM&O REBEL
Title: GM&O REBEL
Description: Here is a much-used publicity photo of the Gulf Mobile & Ohio REBEL on the median of North Rampart Street, just outside of the Southern Railway’s TERMINAL STATION in New Orleans. The photo is undated, but we know it was taken between 1940, when the GM&O was formed, and 1947, when the railroad adopted the Alton Railroad’s red-and-maroon paint scheme, because the train was still wearing its original red-and-silver colors. The REBEL was discontinued between New Orleans and Slidell on 8 March 1954, and TERMINAL STATION was closed on 16 April, when New Orleans Union passenger terminal was placed into full operation. (approximate date of photo)
