Kern. Here is a duplicate 35mm color slide of a photo by Fred Kern that was taken in Bay Head Junction, New Jersey, on 7 September 1953. The two steam locomotives on the right (L to R) are Pennsylvania Railroad engines #3884 and #5367. Both are K-4S (4-6-2) "Pacifics" built in Juniata. #3884 was built during July of 1923 and retired in May of 1956, while #5367 was built in May of 1924 and retired in October of 1956. The brightly-colored diesel-electric locomotive on the left is Fairbanks-Morse "Trainmaster" demonstrator #TM-1, built in April of 1953, rated at 2,400 horsepower, and auditioning with the Central Railroad of New Jersey. Here is one of the earlier K-4s 4-6-2 Pacifics built by the PRR Juniata Shops in May of 1917 and proved the value of this design. Beautiful example of a 1918 Juniata shops K4s Pacific. Note the fireman sitting on top of the coal in the tender. Between 1917-1928, the Juniata shops built 349 K-4s locomotives. FM. Here is an image of a photo by Fred McLeod that was taken near Gallitzin, Pennsylvania, on 21 October 1950. Shown here (L to R) is Pennsylvania Railroad engine #5347 and two more locomotives whose road numbers are not recorded. All are K-4S (4-6-2) "Pacifics." #5347 was built in Juniata during May of 1918 and retired in December of 1955 after 37 years of faithful service. In this context, these locomotives are rockin' 'n' rollin' up the Allegheny Mountains and will soon pass through one of the Gallitzin Tunnels, whereupon the lead two engines will be uncoupled and returned to Altoona for further helper runs up "The Mountain." This image comes from a B&W slide set entitled "Horseshoe Curve, Pennsylvania Railroad" that's produced and distributed by Blackhawk Films of Davenport, Iowa. William E. Burket Collection.
