Chicago Burlington & Quincy Railroad NW2 9248, running light westbound at Naperville, Illinois on March 13, 1965, Ektachrome by Chuck Zeiler. This is the last NW2 delivered to the CB&Q, built in November 1949 (c/n 8492) on EMD Order E1178, an order for this single locomotive. Interestingly, the very next EMD serial number (c/n 8493) belonged to a SW7, CB&Q 9249, built in May 1950. Number 9248 became BN 545 and was retired in May 1983. Note that it has a standby heater enclosed in a cabinet mounted on the running board ahead of the cab. The purpose of this heater was to allow the prime mover to be shut down in cold weather, and the heater would heat and circulate the engine block cooling water to prevent freezing. |
