Here is a duplicate 35mm color slide of a photo by Fred R. Kern that was taken at the Brickyard Crossing in Altoona, Pennsylvania, on 23 July 1955. Shown here (L to R) is Pennsylvania Railroad engine #9520 and three more units whose road numbers are not recorded. All were built by GM-EMD and rated at 1,500 horsepower each. #9520 is an EF-15 constructed in May of 1948 and retired in October of 1962 after just 14 years of revenue service. Here, this A-B-B-A set is powering a merchandise freight train up the Allegheny Mountains via the Horseshoe Curve to Gallitzin and points West. ("Tchowee"; #16 of 40) |
