ATSF 4-6-4 #3453 - Atchison, Topeka & Santa Fe  Contributor's Pick!
This 1927 Baldwin Hudson-type locomotive is a good looking brute. Note the curved smokestack section like another photo in the ablum - is this a type of smoke deflector? Specifics - class 3450, 74" drivers, a respectable 220 psi boiler pressure, 25"x28" cylinders, engine weight of 343,500 lb, tractive effort of 44,223 lb. Rebuilt by the Santa Fe shops in 1937 which increased the boiler pressure to 230 psi. It began working between Chicago & Colorado and later between San Francisco & Bakersfield. The class was retired by 1956. No exact date or location was listed for this photograph so approximations were used. No photographer listed either.
