The only way to ride  Contributor's Pick!
If you cant ride in the engine. Up until NJ Transit reequipped its trains, starting in the mid 1980s, there was a lot of hand me down equipment in service that had been owned by the predecessor roads, much of it cars that were rendered excess as train offs mounted in the 1960s, and finally when Amtrak started in 1971. Almost all of the cars had dutch doors, which were a wonderful place to ride on a nice day. The practice was long standing, and train crews generally didnt chase you. Im riding the NY & Long Branch down on the shore as we approach Elberon, the train sweeping around a long curve behind a pair of E 8s. I always liked the signals on the Bay Head line, one of which is at left. They reminded me of the ACL.
