During January 1977 extremely cold weather took quite a few of Amtrak’s steam-heated cars out of service, so the railroad was forced to discontinue several long-distance trains, including the PANAMA LIMITED. After an absence of several weeks, the train was reinstated on 25 January with Amfleet coaches and food service cars, plus a 600-series baby baggage car; but a sleeping car was not added until December. Here is No. 58 on 6 February, approaching CARROLLTON JUNCTION on New Orleans Union Passenger Terminal track with a typical consist, although the baggage car is behind the coaches and ICG office car 6 is on the rear. |
