A CN local crosses N. Oneida St. as it heads southwest via former C&NW rails at Appleton, WI on 8 Jul. '18. The Non-mountable Curb Island (one variant of Federal Railroad Administration (FRA) approved traffic channelization devices) has been installed recently as part of Appleton's quest for so-called 'Quiet Zone' status. One of the C&NW's 3 Appleton depots stood to the left, on the south side of the tracks between N. Appleton St. and N. Oneida St. The downtown depot closed ca. 1958 and passenger operations were concentrated at the Appleton Junction depot. The building at left is Oneida Heights, 525 N. Oneida St., an apartment complex for seniors. It was built upon the site of several historic, rail served industries. Train was headed back to Neenah after working Little Chute and Kaukauna. |
