First encounter
Title:  First encounter
Description:  I caught up to the CP 2816 at the big curve at Chewie Rd, about four miles south of Watts. I usually chase here in the afternoon; the sun angle is not one Im used to, so dark side for this shot.

Slow roll
Title:  Slow roll
Description:  At Watts, the 2816 took the siding to meet a southbound coal train. Hes rolling up the siding. The slow pace allowed me to get around to the sun side for a wide view.

Protect units
Title:  Protect units
Description:  The pair of FP 7s that came south with the train are also assisting ln the return, here at Watts. CP heritage scheme SD 70ACU 7013 was also part of the entourage. All the diesels were working any time I was close enough to hear.

Waiting on the freight
Title:  Waiting on the freight
Description:  While the 2816 was the star of the show today, its important to remember that CPKC still had a railroad to run. Here the steamer is holding at the north end of Watts siding for a southbound TXUX coal train, which will arrive about ten minutes hence behind a BNSF/CP/KCS power set.

Snaking through
Title:  Snaking through
Description:  I didnt shoot the meet with the coal train, the angle wasnt good, and a lot of foamer clutter, so took off for Siloam Springs, which I knew would be a race, given the traffic in Siloam. I got ahead of him, and set up at the team track, which I felt would be the best sun angle for the time of day. The 2816 is crossing Jefferson St, and snaking through the S curve in town in a long lens shot.

Closing in
Title:  Closing in
Description:  The 2816 rolls up the main, seen through a gap in the shrubbery as it makes its way north. There were a couple of taller bushes that someone should have cut down for a wider view, but you cant have everything!!

Outstanding in the field
Title:  Outstanding in the field
Description:  But, unlike a recent shot, no cows today. Still, a pretty view as the Empress approaches the Ark 59S crossing in Gentry. Id not get another shot at him til Gravette, due to idiots pacing the engine along Ark 59, which runs adjacent to the tracks for the six miles to Decatur. I get the appeal of the moving parts of a steam engine at speed, but get 60 seconds of the action, then move on so youre not holding up a couple dozen other fans who want to get ahead of the train, not to mention disinterested locals who just want to go about their day without being caught up in a lot of unnecessary congestion.

By the team track
Title:  By the team track
Description:  The train passes the team track at Gravette, roughly where the station site was. Normally, Id shoot a northbound at Wolf Creek, between North Dorsey and Gravette-its a pretty shot, and easy to get to-but for the idiot pacers between Gentry and Decatur, and also the fact that the sun angle at Wolf Creek would be all wrong. It really doesnt become a sweet shot til mid afternoon. So, Gravette.

Protect power #1
Title:  Protect power #1
Description:  CP sent some diesels along with the 2816 as protection in case the steam engine failed to proceed. The first was this SD 70ACU heritage unit, 7013. It was working when it went past.

Protect power #2
Title:  Protect power #2
Description:  The classic set of protection power was this pair of FP 9s. Theyd had some issues on the southbound trip, so the SD 70 was added for the return to Canada. They were running when they went past.

Description:  I stuck around at Butler Creek to shoot the coal train, then ran up to get ahead of the 2816. He did some inspecting at Noel, so it was a little while til he showed here, passing the city park at Lanagan.

Title:  Passing the distant signal
Description:  The 2816 rolls past the distant signal for McElhany, several miles to the north. He was rolling pretty good here, and made a great show.

Wide view
Title:  Wide view
Description:  A wider angle view at Goodman shows the 2816, tender and water tanks, and the accompanying diesels, as well as another fan shooting video. At right is the railfan chase vehicle, my wifes 2001 Stratus R/T, the five speed. Great running car, though the lack of AC on this 95 degree day made for a challenge. But it will go 90 MPH!!

Straight at you
Title:  Straight at you
Description:  After Goodman, I took off, but even a five speed didnt let me catch up by McElhany, so I beat it up onto I 49 to the Gateway exit, knowing there was a long tangent that might make an interesting photo. I really wanted to get the shot from the shoulder of I 49, but standing on an interstate highway for a long period was going to get me unwanted attention from the state troopers, so nixed that. Good thing-there was a hi-rail working, and didnt give up his track and time right away, so waited 45 minutes here. Still, a good shot.

Old bridge
Title:  Old bridge
Description:  After getting the shot at Gateway, I again hit the interstate, getting to the I 44/Mo 249 interchange, and took 249 up to Mo 171 to bypass Joplin, which I knew would be a chase killer. It was a good decision, as I heard the detector at MP 150 go off just as I was clearing Airport Drive. I had enough time to get off to the side, but not to cross MO 171, which is a busy two lane at 1600. I was still able to manage a shot of the train coming off the through truss adjacent to the highway. I have to do this with a freight some time.

Roadside pan
Title:  Roadside pan
Description:  The highway and tracks are close enough that a pan shot is possible up through Asbury, then the tracks veer away from the road. I got this last chance grab shot from the car as the train sped away.

Crew change
Title:  Crew change
Description:  The 2816 beat me handily to the yard in Pittsburg, and I got there as the crews were changing, the new crew having just come on. As a bonus, there was a southbound grain train that was adding a unit for his DPU, nose to nose with the 2816. So we had 2816 north meeting CP 8716 south, sweet sixteens!!
