Wye Switchds. Here is an original photo that I took of a Pennsylvania Railroad train at the Wye Switches in Duncansville, Pennsylvania, on 1 August 1962. Shown here (L to R) are engines #9574 and #2008. Both were built by the BaldwiQ Locomotive Works. #9574 is a BF-15 built in March of 1949. rated at 1,500 horsepower, and retired in December of 1963. #2008 is a BF-16 built in October of 1951, rated at 1,600 horsepower, and retired in July of.1966. These two Baldwin "Sharks" and N-5 cabin car # 477719 have just come from East Altoona. They are about to cross US Route 22, after which they will stop and back into the Hollidaysburg Yards, pick-up a freight train, and then head up the New Portage Branch to Gallitzin and points West.

Looks to me like it's had a close encounter of the third kind!

Prominent here (L to R) are Pennsylvania Railroad engine #2021 and two more "BF" Class units whose road numbers are not recorded. All were built by the Baldwin Locomotive Works. #2021 was constructed in March of 1952, rated at 1,600 horsepower, and retired in January of 1967. Visible at the right is a trio of "EF" Class units built by GM-EMD and rated at 1,500 horsepower each.

It and two other Baldwin "Sharks" are pulling an eastbound freighw train under the 7th Street Bridge into the Altoona Yards. Visible bekind it are portions of PRR engines #7070 and #9766-B, which are waiting for orders to proceed with a westbound mixed-cargo freight train.

Boulton. Here is an original photo by an unidentified photographer that was taken at the Horseshoe Curve near Altoona, Pennsylvania, in August of 1967. Shown here (L to R) are Pennsylvania Railroad engines #2361, #2606, and another unit whose road number is not recorded. #2361 is an EF-25 built by GM-EMD inMarch of 1965 and rated at 2,500 horsepower. #2606 is a GF-25 built by General Electric as number "2506" in August of 1962, rated at 2,500 horsepower, and renumbered "2606" in preparation for the PRR-NYC merger. In this context, they're just entering the Curve with a "high-&-wide load" train that's on its way up the Allegheny Mountains to Gallitzin and points West. Visible at the far right is a portion of four-track Signal Bridge #2416.

Shown here (R to L) are PRR engines #9454, #9630-B, #9717, #9594, and #8576. #9454 is an FF-16 built by Fairbanks-Morse in 1950 and rated at 1,600 horsepower. #9630-B is an AF-16 built by the American Locomotive Company in 1951 and rated at 1,600 horsepower. #9717 and #9594 are BF-16's built by the Baldwin Locomotive Works in 1951 and rated at 1,600 horsepower each. #8576 is an ES-15M built by EMD in 1953 and rated at 1,500 horsepower. They are about to pass under the 8th Street Bridge in Juniata on their way to the East Altoona Roundhouse for servicing. Visible in the immediate background are at least eight cabin cars and PRR engine #7923, an ES-12 built by EMD in 1957 and rated at 1,200 horsepower.

On this misty morning, they're rounding the Curve on their way up the Allegheny Mountains to the Cresson Branch where they'll pick-up a fully-loaded mineral train and move it down "The Mountain" to the Altoona Receiving Yards. Notable here is the cabin car: it's the PRR's one-of-a-kind N-5E #477594 built in the ACS in October, 1929. Many thanks to Mr. Anthony Zinskie for identifying this car correctly.
